An early 19th century mahogany Irish hunt table.
These Irish oval-topped drop-leaf tables more commonly known as 'hunt' or 'wake' tables. their narrow shape when closed allows them to be placed against a wall or in a hallway, out of the way. The term hunt table originated from their use for hunt meets, when they were carried outside for drinks. Their mobile nature and usefulness has resulted in many examples still being in situ in period houses throughout Ireland.
